The Tombolo 28 is a practical and unpretentious outboard cruiser designed to bridge the gap between shore and island. Built for a cruising couple with occasional guests, she is equally at home making a 15-25 mile run to a quiet weekend anchorage as she is hauled out on a trailer for off-season storage — or trucked to a distant port for a change of scenery.
Refreshingly no-frills, the Tombolo 28 is a boat built for living, where sandy feet and crab pots are welcome. Her modified-V, low-deadrise hull with a fine entry and long waterline is optimized for a single 150 hp outboard, delivering an economical cruising speed of just under 20 knots, with the ability to push 21-24 knots when desired.

For Builders

Construction plans for building the Tombolo 28 outboard cruiser are now available for home and professional builders! The design is intended for builders with moderate to advanced boatbuilding skills and uses readily available materials and hardware.

The specifications call for epoxy for lamination and bonding due to its superior mechanical properties for this application. The Tombolo uses a cedar strip wood composite for the hull and primarily plywood for the structural components, bulkheads, deck, house, and the remainder of the boat construction.

The plan package is very comprehensive, with plentiful details and specifications from dimensions to laminate callouts. It also includes digital files that allow the builder to have the molds, bulkheads, stringers, and other parts CNC-machined, thus saving time and improving accuracy.
